Celebrities and Renewable Energy

I often wonder why celebrities and famous people can get so much attention on things where we, the average Joe Schmoe, fall on deaf ears.  A couple weeks ago Leo DiCaprio talked about the reality of climate change at his first ever Oscar acceptance speech.  Leo said, “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It’s the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity… for our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed …. Let us not take this planet for granted.”

What is changing? 2015 went in the record books are the hottest year ever recorded on Earth, followed by 2014.  This problem is real.  Many well known people have and are supporting ways to save / protect our environment.  Whether through clean water initiatives, moving towards 100% renewable energy, reducing carbon footprints at power plants or simply educating the public.  As an average citizen, I need to accept the responsibility and do my part in providing a safe environment for my grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.

Wondering how to get involved?  There are a lot of ways, you can follow The Solar Power Professor online or on Facebook, check out various websites like Energy Sage, SolarCity or simply Google energy saving tips.  New ideas are popping up everywhere, even right here in our local communities.  For a few years now, restaurants in California have used fresh seasonal ingredients produced, not only locally, but sustainably in their businesses.  That idea is coming to Illinois in restaurants calling it farm-to-table.  The most recent announcement is that in Yorkville.  We should support our local farmers – help educate them too about renewable energy and what it can mean to them.

Let’s not be the average Joe Schmoe anymore – join me in educating others about renewable energy and making our planet safe for those generations to come.
